Amy Johnson Design Review Day
Arc joined up with Gateway, Hull and East Yorkshire's Housing Pathfinder Renewal Programme, to invite the public to a two-day event on 4th + 6th June, where they were able to sit in on the Design Review Panel for the first time. The site under review was the Amy Johnson site in Hull, for which a scheme has been designed including housing and public art. The public were able to observe the Design Review Panel, and also have their say on the plans.
Jo Byrne, Design Review Panel Manager said:
"It's the first time we've done this. It is exciting for us because it means that the public have got chance to actually come and see the designs in operation and to see how the process works."
A short film made about the day can be viewed below:
new map of Boulevard and Coltman Street
We are very excited to announce the launch of our new illustrative map of the Boulevard and Coltman Street Conservation areas of Hull!
The map has been designed by artist Nicola Streeten and forms the fourth of our series of maps illustrating some of the most architecturally interesting areas of the city. The map is an illustrative representation of the architecture and history of Boulevard and Coltman Street, which are both conservation areas and are integral to the story of Hull’s fishing heritage. This area boasts some excellent Victorian and Edwardian buildings, many of which have been awarded regeneration grants from Hull’s heritage-led regeneration scheme - St. Andrew’s Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).
The map is an excellent historical resource for anyone interested in architecture, housing, heritage and conservation. The map is suitable for all ages, and will be particularly useful for schools as it incorporates a ‘worksheet’ style format on the reverse, encouraging people to think about the area that they live.
If you are interested in obtaining your free copy of the map but are unable to attend the launch event, please get in touch using our contact details above. We are more than happy to post single copies or bundles of maps to your community group or school.
This project is supported by the St Andrew's Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI). The St Andrew's THI is funded equally by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Gateway, Hull's 'Pathfinder' project and is managed by Hull and East Yorkshire Community Foundation on behalf of Hull City Council who are the Accountable Body.

'speed debates!'
Many thanks to those of you who managed to come along to one or both of our ‘speed debates’ - the format provided a vibrant and interactive setting in which we discussed our thoughts, ideas and perceptions of how architecture and the design of our homes is affected by our concerns for safety and climate change. Our speakers engaged with a range of audience members, from 11 year olds to an 82 year old! Some feedback from our attendees and speakers:
“Tonight I have seen that someone has actually at last built an energy efficient house!”
“I have learnt that householders are embracing greener technology such as rain water recycling because it saves money on the water meter.”
“I have learnt about the power of a community to hold councils responsible for advocating better design of the public realm.”
